The Black Nile

Posted by Jason Hussong on Thursday, October 20, 2011,
I love shopping at used book sales - like the ones for libraries trying to clean off some of the shelves - because there are no shortage of good finds. Whether it is at a library sale, a warehouse liquidation, or some other random used book sale, I always seem to find good deals. And that was certainly the case at the last one I attended when I found Dan Morrison's The Black Nile: One Man's Amazing Journey Through Peace and War on the World's Longest River.

I had heard a lot of good things...

Crossing the Heart of Africa

Posted by Jason Hussong on Thursday, August 4, 2011,
I slid Julian Smith's book onto the shelf, just to the right of Joshua Slocum's Sailing Alone Around the World. I had finished it, Crossing the Heart of Africa: An Odyssey of Love and Adventure, and stood before my bookshelf contemplating the story. It wasn't what I had expected and thus I wasn't quite sure what I thought of the story.

Crossing the Heart of Africa is Julian Smith's tale about how he crossed Africa from south to north, following in the footsteps of Englishman Ewart Grog...

Bill Bryson's African Diary

Posted by Jason Hussong on Monday, January 31, 2011,
Several months ago, maybe even a year, I saw Bill Bryson's African Diary on the shelf at the bookstore. I had wanted to read it for some time simply because Bill Bryson wrote it. I love his work and this was one of the outstanding books of his I had yet to read. Well, when I saw it on the shelf, I passed on purchasing it - the book was too skinny at only fifty pages for the price. I wanted something more for my dollar and decided to go another route. But, when I was given a gift card for Ch...

Sailing Alone Around the World

Posted by Jason Hussong on Thursday, November 18, 2010,
I tend to find myself in a bookstore for a randomly justified reason. I really have no good reason to head in, as though I'm out of books to read, but I somehow make up a reason and go in there and buy something I don't really need. I did this a few months ago and picked up, among other things, Joshua Slocum's Sailing Alone Around the World. And honestly, I'm not even totally sure why I bought it since I'm not exactly interested in sailing.

Like many books tend to do after I buy them, Sa...

Gorillas in the Mist

Posted by Jason Hussong on Monday, July 19, 2010,
Before I travel, as I wrote previously, I like to get a bit of a perspective on a country. Normally I prefer to pick up a copy of a history book as I try to get a good feel of what a country has been through and how it's developed. I gave it a bit of thought preceding my trip to Rwanda and decided to go in a different direction as I was able to pick up enough of a historical background from the marvel of the Internet; I instead purchased a copy of Dian Fossey's Gorillas in the Mist.

Most...

Long Way Down: John O'Groats to Cape Town

Posted by Jason Hussong on Tuesday, August 18, 2009,
Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman's Long Way Down was just every bit as good as their first trip by motorcycle, Long Way Round, which took them on an adventure around the world.

On this trip, much like going from London to New York, the duo went from the northernmost point in Scotland to the southernmost tip of South Africa by motorcycle. They covered some extremely treacherous roads, seemingly constantly needing to repair their bikes due to the wear and tear, and had some amazing advent...
