My Five Favorite Travel Books

Posted by Jason Hussong on Thursday, June 23, 2011,
I'm not much of a listmaker outside of grocery shopping, packing for vacations, or - alright, I'm a listmaker, born and raised. There, I admitted it. I create lists and write notes down, only to feel the pleasure of crossing something off of them, for most anything I do. And it is no small wonder I haven't yet created any sort of list when it comes to travel writing. Well, that is until now.

I stare at my bookshelf in wonder and am amazed at the great number of fantastic sto...

Sailing Alone Around the World

Posted by Jason Hussong on Thursday, November 18, 2010,
I tend to find myself in a bookstore for a randomly justified reason. I really have no good reason to head in, as though I'm out of books to read, but I somehow make up a reason and go in there and buy something I don't really need. I did this a few months ago and picked up, among other things, Joshua Slocum's Sailing Alone Around the World. And honestly, I'm not even totally sure why I bought it since I'm not exactly interested in sailing.

Like many books tend to do after I buy them, Sa...

The Travel Book

Posted by Jason Hussong on Tuesday, November 9, 2010,
I have a couple of destinations planned for 2011, but I'm by no means close to being done. I still have a good chunk of vacation time from work available, and I'm trying to decide where I want to go next. I have more than a few ideas, which is a problem I'm happy to have. But, I ultimately do need to narrow it down. And in order to do so, I look to The Travel Book: A Journey Through Every Country in the World to help.

I absolutely love Lonely Planet's photo journey through each country -...

Letters to Zerky

Posted by Jason Hussong on Thursday, September 16, 2010,
I've done a lot of travel reading lately, but haven't found anything exactly inspirational and personal at the same time. A lot of what I've read has been quite good, but just not exactly what I was looking for. And then I saw Letters to Zerky: A Father's Legacy to a Lost Son and a Road Trip Around the World on the shelf in the store. I had walked by it several times in the past since it's been out since 2009, but it caught my attention this time around. And I'm glad it did since it was exact...

360 Degrees Longitude

Posted by Jason Hussong on Thursday, April 29, 2010,
I like to take books on vacations that I think with both last me the whole trip and also be possible to finish in the time that I'm gone. It's a delicate balance to strike as it's difficult to tell exactly how long it'll take you to read a book before you even pick it up as it could be rubish or it could be so good that you don't want to put it down, breezing through it in only a couple of days. Well, when I packed 360 Degrees Longitude: One Family's Journey Around the World for a recent road...

Around the World in 80 Days

Posted by Jason Hussong on Sunday, March 14, 2010,
I was walking through the book store the other day trying to kill some time. I had no where particular to be so I figured I'd go there and wander through the stacks for a while. This is something I enjoy doing from time-to-time, always hoping that I won't buy anything but instead just wander and enjoy killing a few hours with a bit of noisiness and people watching.

Yeah, I was wrong there. I don't think I ever go into a book store and not buy at least one book. Well, this time, as I walked...

The Chicago of Europe

Posted by Jason Hussong on Wednesday, February 10, 2010,
It is no secret that I'm not a fan of Mark Twain's work. I have not attempted to conceal this in any way, and actually have been rather up front about it. So, when I was offered a copy of a compliation of some of Twain's writing, I made darn sure the publisher knew that they were ice skating uphill on this one. Yet, for some odd reason, that didn't stop them. Either very confident in their work, or foolishly blind, they sent me off a copy anyway of The Chicago of Europe: And Other Tales of ...

Adventures of a Continental Drifter

Posted by Jason Hussong on Friday, December 4, 2009,
The practice of selling everything I own after packing a few essentials in a case and heading out the door to see the world has been a dream of mine for a long time. Based on another life I like to lead I'm not sure it's exactly practical, but I do envy those that can live the life like Caine from Kung Fu. One of those that lives such a life is Elliott Hester, and he's written a book that's called Adventures of a Continental Drifter: An Around-the-World Excursion into Weirdness, Danger, Lus...

Long Way Round: Chasing Shadows Across the World

Posted by Jason Hussong on Tuesday, August 18, 2009,
It's a bit delayed since it's publishing in 2004, but I just finished reading Long Way Round: Chasing Shadows Across the World by actors Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman.

I had heard about the book a while ago, but had never picked it up until I heard about them publishing the next one, Long Way Down, where they ride their motorcycles from Scotland to South Africa.

According to Amazon.com, that second book is supposed to be released on paperback on June 9.

Long Way Round was such...
