A Look Across Berlin

February 17, 2012
Twelve years ago I traveled to Berlin on a RIAS Berlin Kommission fellowship trip. I recently returned through the same program, and it was amazing how much has changed in Germany's capitol. I noticed a lot of little things, but the biggest was probably the completion of the Holocaust Memorial. This picture is a view of Germany's parliament building, the Reichstag, which sits on the other side of the Brandenburg Gate and the U.S. embassy from the memorial.

Olympic Memories: Scraping Windshields

February 10, 2012
Celebrations and ceremonies have been going on all week to commemorate the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics. As such, this week's photo of the week comes from my trip to see the Games with my father. We have a lot of great memories, but the most amusing is from a bus we took from our hotel in Park City to see the downhill skiing in Ogden. The bus driver could do nothing right, he did not even know the way to the venue. He also didn't know how to defrost his windshield. Another passenger had to ...

My Favorite Breckenridge Snow Sculpture

February 3, 2012
The 22nd annual International Snow Sculpture Championship wraps up this weekend in Breckenridge. I saw the sculptures last weekend, their first on display after full completion. I loved seeing all of the designs come to fruition. They were all amazing, although one was my clear cut favorite - AI by Team USA from Wisconsin. And that is what I have chosen here for my photo of the week - albeit photos from different angles.

The festival brochure quotes the team: "Our concept for Bre...

A Misty Sedona Morning

January 27, 2012
I didn't mean to return to Sedona, Arizona. I had passed through the previous day, but was now looking for a different attraction. Since I had stumbled back into town, though, I figured I'd at least stop and grab a quick bite of lunch. While doing a little shopping and walking past all of the stores, I found my way into a small parking lot looking out at some of the many beautiful red rock formations. This one was on a cold, misty morning which I was able to appreciate largely on my own...

The Funky Dance of the Saguaro

January 20, 2012
I have spent this past week exploring some of the best spots the state of Arizona has to offer. One of my favorite stops on the trip was to Saguaro National Park, which is near Tucson. Never before had I seen the giant saguaro cactus - some of them three times my height - in person. So when I saw my first forest full of them this week, I could only stand there in awe and admire the funky dance so many of them do with their arms - just like this one in the park's west unit.

A View of the Athenian Acropolis

January 13, 2012
This first country I ever visited outside of the United States was Greece. I did so during a high school trip, which also took us to several cities in Italy. This trip really jumpstarted my desire to travel, already steadily growing due to family vacations in the U.S. during my youth. One of my favorite pictures from my trip to Greece is of the Athenian Acropolis.

Canoeing in Big Bend National Park

January 6, 2012
I'm kicking off a new page on my website, My Photos, with a picture from my favorite U.S. national park - Big Bend National Park. This new section will feature a weekly photo from my favorite travel destinations. I'll post a different shot I took every Friday with a brief description.

The inaugural photo is of canoers passing through the Santa Elena Canyon in Big Bend National Park in southern Texas, right along the border of Mexico. I fell in love with the park while spending time ther...
