Mt. Rushmore at Night

Posted by Jason Hussong on Tuesday, September 29, 2009,
The preservation of the sacred fire of liberty and the destiny of the republican model of government are justly considered as deeply, perhaps as finally staked, on the experiment entrusted to the hands of the American People.

~ George Washington, first inaugural address, April 30, 1789

I bought my annual National Park pass this year because I knew I'd be hitting a lot of the great places across the United States. It would've been nice had someone told me though that Mt. Rushmore wasn't ...

The Cairo Tower

Posted by Jason Hussong on Thursday, September 24, 2009,
The Cairo Tower was my first stop on my trip to Egypt with my friend Brian. We checked into our hotel right across the Nile River from the 610 foot tall structure, dropped off our bags, and made for where the best views of Cairo can be found. And we were anything but disappointed.

Before my trip to Egypt I read that the Cairo Tower, which looks like a lotus with its latticework design, was the second most visited site in Cairo. I found this hard to believe with all of the wonderful things ...

The Lions at MGM

Posted by Jason Hussong on Sunday, September 20, 2009,
Generally my trips to Las Vegas revolve around playing cards and doing other such guy things. But, regardless of the trip, I always like to take a moment to pass by the lion exhibit at the MGM Grand Hotel & Casino. I love stopping to appreciate the lions, a bit of wildlife in the hustle and bustle of Sin City, and doing something other than play cards for a minute or two.

I've traveled to Las Vegas so many times that I actually have to use my toes to count it. I know my nice in the ci...

The Minnesota Zoo

Posted by Jason Hussong on Wednesday, September 16, 2009,
I always held the Minnesota Zoo as the standard to the way a zoo should be since I grew up in the Twin Cities area. Through my travels though, I learned that it was a disappointing standard to have. But recently, they sure have spruced up the 500 acre facility making it a good one to have as a bar once again.

Granted it's no San Diego Zoo, but there are still some pretty great exhibits and opportunities to be had here. And after all the remodeling that's recently taken place, it's a real...

New Zealand ~ 2007

Posted by Jason Hussong on Friday, September 11, 2009,
My favorite television show, the Amazing Race, was on tonight and they visited New Zealand for this leg of the race.

As I watched the show intermittently while at work, which is all I really can watch it there, I thought back to the time I spent in this wonderful country just over a year ago now.

Next to Antarctica I would say that New Zealand was the best country I've ever visited. It was absolutely gorgeous, the people were friendly, and it was quite unlike anything I had ever seen...

The Minuteman Missile National Historic Site

Posted by Jason Hussong on Friday, September 11, 2009,
"A nuclear-missile silo is one of the quintessential Great Plains objects: to the eye, it is almost nothing, just one or two acres of ground with a concrete slab in the middle and some posts and poles sticking up behind an eight-foot-high Cyclone fence; but to the imagination, it is the end of the world." ~ Ian Frazier, Great Plains, 1989

I studied a lot of Cold War history, particularly from the Soviet side, in high school and college. Looking back on those days, I think they helped ma...

Larnach Castle

Posted by Jason Hussong on Wednesday, September 9, 2009,
Businessman William Larnach had his castle built high on the hills of the Otago Peninsula on the South Island of New Zealand between 1871 and 1885 as a residence for his family. To build the large manor home workers had to pull and haul stone up from the bottom of the hill, which is no small feat considering you could be breathless just from walking up it empty handed.

I arrived late at the Otago Peninsula Motel to check in and was dead tired from my drive down to Dunedin from Christchur...

The Devils Tower

Posted by Jason Hussong on Friday, September 4, 2009,
See how nature - trees, flowers, grass - grows in silence; see the stars,
the moon, the sun, how they move in silence. ~ Mother Teresa

The Devils Tower, declared the first national monument in 1906, is one of those places I'm just not sure I can wrap my head around. So much of it seems so contradictory that it just doesn't fit together for me. One thing is certain though, I did enjoy my brief stop and would recommend the Devils Tower to anyone.

The natural beauty is not at all what I wo...
