In one of the best rivalries in all of college sports, the University of Minnesota will clash with the University of North Dakota this weekend in a two game hockey series. Both teams - perennial contenders for the NCAA national c hampionship - have less love for each other than Cain did for Abel. So a bitter, hard-fought series with vicious hits and spectacularly memorable moments will be a certainty. Such is the tradition of Golden Gopher hockey, which I always try to enjo... A Day at the Science Museum of Minnesota
Posted by Jason Hussong on Monday, January 2, 2012,
I have my favorite regular haunts I must visit everytime I go home to Minnesota. The majority of them are restaurants unavailable to me in Colorado, but there are a few touristy locations I enjoy frequenting. The Science Museum of Minnesota is not one of them. But I found myself there, nonetheless, one afternoon over my Christmas beak, since it is a favorite stop for my sister and her family.
We began the day at one of their favorite downtown St. Paul restaurants - Cossetta... Continue reading ...
The Ghost of Christmas 2011
Posted by Jason Hussong on Monday, December 26, 2011,
I had a fantastic year of travel. It was probably one of the best ever for me. And with it came recognition as one of the best travel blogs of 2011 by Washington Flyer. To sum up my annual adventures in a single story is like writing about your own year, everything that has happened to you - all of the ups and downs and round and rounds - in just a couple of pages. It isn't easy. But for that opportunity, looking back on my year, I am most certainly thankful.

Traveling Isn't Always Fun
Posted by Jason Hussong on Monday, February 28, 2011,
The idea of traveling generally provokes images of enjoyment, recreation and relaxation. But, sadly, travel isn't always fun. I was reminded of that this past weekend when I returned to my childhood home in the Twin Cities to attend the funeral services for my Godfather. Being there, no matter how difficult, was a trip I would have done before any other; I wanted to be there to offer my sympathies to his family, as well as console my own, but also to say goodbye to a man I too looked to... A Walk Through the Weisman
Posted by Jason Hussong on Monday, September 20, 2010,
I arrived on the University of Minnesota's campus to meet a high school friend and her son for lunch. I asked to meet there so I could see the Weisman Art Museum again, something I haven't done since college. I've wanted to do this for a while, but time is always short when I'm visiting family back in Minnesota. On this visit, though, it came together like pieces in a puzzle.
I was in high school when the museum opened. I remember it was rather controversial since none of the other buil... Continue reading ...
A Stop at the Headwaters of the Mighty Mississippi
Posted by Jason Hussong on Monday, September 13, 2010,
It's entirely possible that I was one of only a handful of kids ever to grow up in Minnesota and not go to the headwaters of the Mississippi River in Itasca State Park. At least I don't ever recall having gone to the park. I know I've traveled to Bemidji, Minnesota before to see Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox, but I don't remember a trip to see where the great river begins. So, when I recently found myself in Bemidji, I seized the opportunity to do so.
It all started with a desire to ... Continue reading ...
A National Parks Pass Review
Posted by Jason Hussong on Tuesday, July 27, 2010,
A year ago I purchased an annual pass for the U.S. National Park Service, (left) and made it a point to hit as many places as I could during the life of the pass. I wanted to get out and experience more of the natural world around me, as well as learn about the history of important events and places that I maybe didn't know about before I purchased my pass. Some of the places I had visited before, like Rocky Mountain National Park (above)here in Colorado, but overall I'd give it the big ol... Continue reading ...
Travels with Flat Carter
Posted by Jason Hussong on Monday, February 8, 2010,
A couple of weeks ago I received my nephews school project in the mail. Yes, I too remember the day when I did my own homework, but now it's not like that thanks to Flat Stanley. It's a whole new ball game as kids send projects away to friends and family to learn about their lives and what it's like where they live. I have happily received Flat Carter, and have some big plans for the little guy.

Christmas Snow Driving
Posted by Jason Hussong on Thursday, December 24, 2009,
I find long drives a bit theraputic; they allow me to relax, unwind and work through anything that's been on my mind lately. Some drives, like those home to Minnesota, can be a bit on the long side and tiring too, but I don't mind them so much. Well, I don't mind them until I get stuck in a blizzard, which has happened the last few years during my holiday drive to or from Colorado.
Generally I celebrate an early Christmas with the family so my brother's and sister's families can do a San... Continue reading ...
The Minneapolis Institute of Arts
Posted by Jason Hussong on Thursday, December 17, 2009,
I have a handful of favorite places that I like to hit when I go home to the Minneapolis area. And yeah, most of them may actually be restaurants and bars, but a few aren't; one in particular is the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. I t's a great place to get lost and look at some high class art for free. Yep, that's right, it's doesn't cost a dime if you're visiting the main part of the museum - special exhibits are extra.
Normally I drop in for an hour or two to bridge a gap that I have in... Continue reading ...
The Mall of America
Posted by Jason Hussong on Friday, October 30, 2009,
I grew up in Minnesota, the land of the indoor shopping mall, and return a few times each year to see family and friends. It seems each time I'm there I always end up in one of the several malls for some social time at one of the bars. Since there are so many malls there's always one centrally located that makes it a perfect gathering spot to spend the day. But, for many people, they fly in on a holiday just to shop.

The Pipestone National Monument
Posted by Jason Hussong on Wednesday, October 14, 2009,
This admirable hill awaits the poet and the painter, who should visit it when the last rays of the setting sun are falling upon it.
The city of Pipestone, Minnesota is a town that sits on the border of South Dakota in southwestern Minnesota. It always felt like a far off place to me as a child growing up in a Minneapolis suburb. I'm not sure it's much different now as family asked why I wanted to drive all the way out there; they had no idea that the Pipe... Continue reading ...
The Minnesota Zoo
Posted by Jason Hussong on Wednesday, September 16, 2009,
I always held the Minnesota Zoo as the standard to the way a zoo should be since I grew up in the Twin Cities area. Through my travels though, I learned that it was a disappointing standard to have. But recently, they sure have spruced up the 500 acre facility making it a good one to have as a bar once again.
Granted it's no San Diego Zoo, but there are still some pretty great exhibits and opportunities to be had here. And after all the remodeling that's recently taken place, it's a real... Continue reading ...
